We have fished extensively
in Norway, but, we are always drawn back to the Orkla for lots of
reasons,
mainly, it's a manageable size, about the same as the middle
Dee or Spey, all the beats we fish have excellent fly water,
it does not suffer from extreme or rapid variations in water height or
colour ( in other words we have never been washed off,
even when other rivers were unfishable) because the flow is controlled.
But we suppose the real reason is, when we go, the first two weeks of
June, all the fish are big,
we have never caught or seen a fish under 18lbs, 80% of our June fish
are 20 to 30lbs, and a few between 30 to 45lbs.
In 2008 we went to Orkla for 4 days to test fish some new beats, we
landed four fish with an average weight of 24lbs,
the largest 32lbs to Jean’s rod, all the fish were taken on
floating lines with sink tips (it was a mild spring).
Another of our favourite big fish
rivers is Verdal, the Tingval beat owned by John Olav & Hannah
Oldren has some excellent fly water. They have built a superb lodge on
the river for accommodating visiting anglers, for more info see www.verdalselva.com
